impressive display in the 1-1 draw with West Ham United at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“We fight as a team, the spirit is good and we always stay positive,” said Kongolo, who was included by Louis Van Gaal in Holland’s 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil.

“Whether we lose or we don’t get three points, we stay as a group, we fight every week, and we stay together.

“We will never give up to the last game of the season. We have a lot of confidence together.”

Kongolo was one of Town’s most consistent performers during their difficult start to the season, but he was injured after just 29 minutes of the home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, September 29.

Head coach David Wagner revealed he was ahead of schedule in his recovery, but he wasn’t risked until the November 5 victory against Fulham. Wagner described the talented defender – who originally signed for Town on loan last season and helped them retain Premier League status – as a warrior after that return. The boss said Kongolo was a fighter, and someone you could rely on to leave everything out on the pitch. “When I get on the pitch I never give up, not until the last minute,” said Kongolo, when asked why the coach came up with that assessment of his play. “When I was young I watched documentaries about sporting legends, so the soldier is in me,” he added.
