Players, spectators and the local community have already started work on ambitious plans to finish the project at Miry Lane before the club’s 160th birthday in 2020.

Wendy Kemp, committee member at Thongsbridge, said: “We’re planning on extending the front and the back, adding inside toilets, disabled toilets with baby changing facilities, and upgrading the kitchen.

“Outside, we want to add disabled ramps because there’s not much access for people with disabilities at the moment.”

Despite making much-needed improvements to the changing facilities in recent years, members currently use a small, prefabricated clubhouse with no hot water.

They also have outdoor toilet block, with no disabled access, that freezes over during winter.

The clubhouse is to be built by the members themselves, including family and friends, with help from local contractors and suppliers, and they hope to get as many people involved in the project as possible to help with fundraising efforts.

Mrs Kemp’s husband, Gerald Kemp, is a retired civil engineer and has applied his knowledge to help structure the team towards the end goal.

He said: “We’re doing very well with it. It’s a six-month schedule that’s so far going to plan and next week we’ll start adding the timber frame and roof.”

Thongsbridge CC play in the top division of Drakes Huddersfield League, with a junior team, girls’ team, women’s softball team and senior team.

Many players at the club have achieved representative honours, including Georgia Draper who was selected for the ECB women’s training program this winter.

The club also have a history of supporting local charities such as Kirkwood Hospice, the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Club chairman Alan Moore said: “So far, our build is on schedule for the start of next season.

“However, we will need to work hard on fundraising to ensure that we achieve our goal of creating a community hub and venue for local people, as well as new facilities for cricket in the area.”

The club have organised a sponsored walk and arranged bag packing in local supermarkets to raise money for the project.

The club have already received a £2,000 grant from the Holme Valley parish council and have requested a further £50,000 from the English Cricket Board, but are aiming to raise £100,177 towards the project.
