How to keep elderly safe from harm at Christmas

-

Here’s an alternative. They buy their own land. Pay for their own water services, electricity services, gas services, sewage services. They also contribute to the social funding of the area they stay in to help those who aren’t fortunate to be able to pay for those things themselves. In return they get to use local roads, local hospitals, local dentists and local emergency services should they be unfortunate enough to need them, whilst at the same time being happy in the knowledge that they are contributing to help those who cannot do the same receive the same. You cannot have all the benefits of a modern society and not be willing to contribute to it. Frank Ifield, singer, Ridley Scott, film director, George Graham, former footballer and manager, Roger Glover, rock musician Billy Idol, rock singer, Lorraine TV presenter, Gary Lineker broadcaster and former footballer, HUDDERSFIELD Police representatives gave a talk to the Huddersfield Over Fifties Forum (HOFF).

The talk was about the increasing number of scams that the elderly are being subjected too.

The two ladies giving the talk knew their stuff and we all came away much the wiser and determined to share the knowledge and the many leaflets given out.

Ironically the next day an elderly neighbour told me she had received a phone call demanding £3,000 she owed them. She wisely put the phone down immediately.

Not all older people react this way. One reason is loneliness can make the elderly more vulnerable and thus more agreeable to rip-offs.

Esther Rantzen (pictured) ,along with AGEUK, has done much to prevent elderly loneliness and has now turned her attention on how the elderly are being ripped of by greedy, evil people.

My interest in the elderly being targeted began more than 10 years ago when I attended a conference given by a retired police inspector in Leeds. He had been involved in a case where thieves noticing the rundown state of her home robbed an old lady of all she had.

Not content with this they bound her to a chair placing her in front of an electric fire. She was not found for three weeks.

Her death determined the policeman to use his retirement to warn and protect the elderly. Christmas is a time of goodwill and giving – but it is also a gift for those who exploit through social media, newspaper advertising, telephone and door knocking. Please make sure your family, friends and neighbours are safe this Christmas by being aware of any potential exploitation and harm. IN 50 years of watching British politics, I don’t think I have witnessed anything as bizarre as our MPs, including Theresa May, convincing themselves that Leave meant Remain.

MPs have taken a national opportunity and turned it into a constitutional and political crisis. It is truly weird, and absolutely dishonest. Do they think there will be no consequences?

MPs should remember the 2009 expenses scandal. Such cheating at the heart of government over many years severely undermined the electorate’s trust in our politicians.

It seems financial corruption has now made way for political corruption, destroying trust in democracy. If MPs back Mrs May’s Remain sell-out, voting becomes pointless, and so does Westminster. If it isn’t independence, it isn’t Leave. Everything else is MPs kidding themselves, and trying to kid us. MY personal view is that our area is served by three lightweight MPs so can I ask for another vote?

Well obviously not! It was the will of the people the honourable members were voted in by a majority vote. So our democracy is based on voting and acceptance of the result.

You cannot pick and choose, so let’s be forever grateful that the majority vote was to leave Europe.
