Mayor’s car row after lights event

-

People had to bang on the car to make him stop otherwise children would have been hit

Children from Crow Lane School (pictured) were singing as the Mayor’s car began to drive off. Inset: Mayor of Kirklees Clr Gwen Lowe allowed to happen without the public of Kirklees being made aware.” Writing on Facebook, Caroline Wike, added: “It was a disgrace!!! For parents having to smack the Mayor’s car in order to make it stop. All because they were in a rush to the next light switch on.” Betty Plum also expressed concern. “There was one person between the car and my child and the Mayor was pushing the car forward before the children could be placed in single file so that the car could get through. “There was just no patience and it was scary for the children.” But Paddy Adams disagreed: “The kids were nowhere near. Stop blowing things out of proportion please or Father Xmas won’t be coming to your house.” A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “At this busy time of year the Mayor is invited to many festive events across the Borough. “On Saturday night the Mayor was due to attend the Milnsbridge event as well as other events later that evening. The Mayoral car parked as directed by the event organiser and when the time for departure came the route was safely cleared and the car moved slowly and safely through the crowd to allow departure for the next engagement.” The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Gwen Lowe, could not be reached for comment.
