It looked like Wythenshawe-born Fury had done enough to win the fight after 12 rounds of their contest at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, as he dominated the majority of the bout by using his jab and movement extremely well.

That is despite Fury getting knocked down twice throughout the fight. One of the knockdowns came in round nine, before another came in round 12. It looked like Fury was down and out in round 12, but he somehow managed to get up and beat the count. The fight went the distance, with the judges scoring it 115-111 Wilder, 114-110 Fury, and a 113-113 draw. It means that Wilder retains his WBC title, and both men remain undefeated.

Speaking after fight Fury said: “We’re on away soil. I got knocked down twice, but I still believe I won the fight. The world knows the truth, I thought I won the fight. I got put down with some good shots, I showed good heart to get back up. I came here and fought my heart out.

“I hope I did you all proud after nearly three years out of the ring. I was never going to be knocked out tonight. I came here tonight and I fought my heart out. I’ve been away from my family for 10 weeks. I’m just going to spend some time with my family.

“One hundred per cent we’ll do the rematch. We are two great champions. Me and this man are the two best heavyweights on the planet.

“Wilder is the biggest puncher in the heavyweight division in history. I’m a slick boxer but he landed on me twice, I thought I won, he thought he won, the only winners tonight were the fans. I’m going to go home, have some Christmas dinner and enjoy my family. I’m sure we’ll do it again. It’s a lovely belt and I want it in my collection.”

There’s plenty of appetite for a rematch and Fury, a United fan, wants it to take place in Manchester.

Speaking post-fight, Fury’s promoter Frank Warren said: “I’d love the rematch. I’d love to see it in the UK. We’d fill a football stadium up, Wembley, Arsenal, any of those big stadiums...”

It was at this point that Fury interjected, saying: “Old Trafford, come on Frank!”

It is estimated Fury can console himself with an £8m purse.

And while he felt that he won the fight, defending champion Wilder also thought that he should have got the verdict. “I think with the two knockdowns I definitely won the fight. We poured our hearts out tonight. We’re both warriors, but with those two drops I think I won the fight,” said Wilder.

“I came out slow. I rushed my punches. I didn’t sit still. I was too hesitant. I started overthrowing the right hand and I just couldn’t adjust.

“I would love for it to be my next fight (on the rematch). Why not? Let’s give the fans what they want to see. It was a great fight and let’s do it again. It doesn’t matter to me where we do it.”
