News /Is this the most remote hotel in the world?

-

SET in one of the most epic locations in the world in east Greenland, you may not be able to pronounce the name of the Ittoqqotoormiit guest house, but you’ll certainly want to visit it.

If you can handle the three flights and a helicopter ride it takes to get there from the UK, the reward is the highest mountain in the Arctic, the Northern Lights, incredible views and even a good chance you might see the odd polar bear.

Travel site Hotels.com says it has seen a huge increase in searches for off-the-grid travel compared to last year, as travellers seek out more unique destinations.

They think that Greenland - one of the coldest places on earth- is going to be a travel hot spot next year - and now they are offering to pick up most of the hotel bill for travellers prepared to brave the sub zero temperatures.

You’ll still have to cover the cost of taxes and fees, and a one per cent fee, but they’ll cover the cost of the room for stays at the Ittoqqotoormiit guest house this March.

The tiny town, which is home to just 450 people, was founded in 1925 by Inuit settlers.

Its closest neighbors are the musk oxen, polar bears and walrus of the National Park of North-East Greenland and the Danish Sirius Patrol based 428km away - that’s the elite Danish dog sled unit, one of the most respected military units in the world.

Spring is the perfect time to visit Ittoqqotoormiit. The island is frozen for nine months of the year, but the early spring temperatures range from -20 degrees to zero.

But anyone who is tempted by the opportunity to REALLY get away from it all should be warned that it’s a bit of a mammoth journey to get to the hotel.

After flying to Reykjavik in Iceland, you’ll need to fly on to Akureyri, spend a night there before taking another flight to Constable Point, and finally a 15 minute helicopter ride to Ittoqqortoormiit.

Adam Jay, the newly-appointed President of Hotels.com brand, an epic adventurer himself said: “Greenland as a destination is really hotting up, even though it’s minus 20 most of the time, as today’s travelers are seeking those rewarding, once-in-alifetime experiences.

“This stunning peninsular is an epic bucket-list destination where you can go sledding with wolves, kayaking in the Arctic and maybe see the Northern Lights from your room.

“It’s truly spectacular and the best bit is - we’re picking up most of the room tab!”

The coupon code for the Ittoqqortoormiit Guesthouse is exclusive to Hotels.com and is available to book now until 31 December 2018 (subject to very limited availability), for stays in the month of March 2019 only.
