-

HEY are asked to repair electric motors in anything from horse hair clippers to massive underwater pumps. And now Huddersfield electro-mechanical engineering specialist Westin Drives has won a top award.

It was named Service Centre of the Year in the annual awards of the Association of Electrical and Mechanical Trades.

Service manager Michael Limb received a plaque and certificate at a gala dinner in Coventry.

The awards showcase the best achievements from the electrical and mechanical trades sector.

The AEMT citation said: “After a £1m investment in facilities including a 20 tonne lifting capacity, state-of the-art CNC machinery and a technical training room, Westin Drives now provides customers with a broad range of services from its service centre.

“The company is set-up well for the future of its industry. It is investing in recruiting and training apprentices, as it sees this as a vital in filling the skills gap the industry is experiencing.”

Michael said: “We were thrilled to receive the award. Everyone here has played a part in achieving this honour. Considerable investment has been used to equip our workshop and build a team of highly skilled engineers to support our customers.

“We have devoted particular attention to promoting apprenticeships with the intention of acquiring and developing the skills we need for the future.”

In the past 18 months, the growing company has recruited six apprentices from the Huddersfield area. Sitting at the heart of the business community, it provides the most relevant and valuable services and benefits to its members. Its knowledge and understanding of the challenges and opportunities of both now and the future ensures that members remain connected, supported and represented locally, nationally and internationally.

Recognising the specific needs of businesses across each district and understanding their individuality, the Chamber introduced the new sub divisions, to provide a more localised approach to business support.

Members will now benefit from localised networking events and conferences, business support services and have district representation, as well as wider regional support.

Martin Hathaway, managing director of the Mid Yorkshire Chamber, said: “We wanted to bring our brand more in line with The Chamber network, showcase our drive for business growth, as well as communicate our member benefits in a clearer way.

“Introducing the sub districts means that we can provide even more local support to businesses with the region.

“We understand that all businesses think differently and have different needs, especially across the various districts. We are still one Chamber but with three districts and we hope this more localised support will be more beneficial to our members.”
