‘Terriers need to sign striker this January’

from Rondon, after excellent approach play from Ayoze Perez and Javier Manquillo.

Town had no answer as the ball was cleanly swept in from the right flank and Lossl was left with no chance as the 29-yearold Venezuelan pounced.

Lowe had a shot parried away before Wagner changed things with a double substitution near the hour mark, sending on Erik Durm and Ramadan Sobhi for Kongolo and Lowe. Ramadan made an early break into the box, finding Pritchard for a shot which hit Lascelles full in the face, shortly before the ball was changed for being deflated.

Hogg was booked after losing control of the ball and pulling back Atsu, and Newcastle made their first change when Isaac Hayden replaced Ki Sungyuenga with 18 minutes left.

On 77, Hogg was replaced by Isaac Mbenza as Town tried desperately to find some attacking edge, but Newcastle held two firm lines of defence.

While Newcastle sent on one last sub, Paul Dummett for Kenedy, Town piled on the pressure into the four minutes of added time, but it wasn’t enough. MATCH of the Day pundit Alan Shearer believes Huddersfield Town need to add a striker to their ranks in the January transfer window.

The Newcastle United legend assessed the Terriers’ 1-0 defeat to the Magpies and was left unimpressed by David Wagner’s side.

The Premier League’s top scorer of all time questioned the positioning of some Town men during the match and believes the Yorkshire club must add another forward in January to give themselves a chance of staying in the top tier.

To kick off the analysis on Match of The Day, Gary Lineker said: “It’s very, very clear what’s the problem with Huddersfield - scoring goals.

“In this game they had 74 per cent of possession, which is the highest percentage of possession this season while still losing a game.”

Shearer replied: “10 goals in 17 games. I know Mounie didn’t play because he was suspended, but here’s one of the reasons why. Depoitre was up front on his own, battling three centre halves all afternoon.

“There were a lot of hopeful balls into the box with him on his own.

“He was fighting centre halves with very little quality on the end of the crosses.”

Speaking on a particular long ball towards the Belgian, the 48-year-old added: “What on earth is he meant to do with that? “[Alex] Pritchard and [Terence] Kongolo have got to get in closer because he might win that header and flick it on, but if he did who is it going to?

“What is the point in those two guys standing out wide? They have no chance of creating anything with performances like that.

“Yes, they had a lot of possession, but they didn’t trouble Newcastle.”

Shearer continued: “They’ve got to try and do something about that in January by bringing in a forward to try and get them goals and get them further up the pitch because they are just lacking that little bit of quality in the box.”
