AN elderly woman was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary after she was struck by a car.

Details of the circumstances of the incident at Meltham are unclear but witnesses told the Examiner the OAP had been left lying on the pavement after a collision with a vehicle at the junction of Huddersfield Road and Bishops Way - the turning for Durker Roods Hotel.

A police cordon was put in place and officers in three police BMW X5 traffic vehicles and an unmarked BMW 5 series were brought in to investigate, following the incident at 11.30am.

About an hour later West Yorkshire Police’s specialist Forensic Col- lision Investigation also joined the police probe.

Two officers went into a property close to the scene and examined a white Mercedes SLC sports car.

They were then seen driving back towards Huddersfield before returning 10 minutes later to return the two seater car to its home.

A traffic sergeant at the scene would only confirm that the elderly woman had been in a collision with a vehicle and would not confirm if the car inspected was involved.

A spokesman for the adjacent Greenacres Care Home confirmed the victim was one of their residents and suggested the collision had been quite minor and the woman had been taken to hospital due to her age.

A witness, who did not want to be named but lives locally, said she had seen an elderly woman lying in the road not moving.

She said: “I was driving past on my way to the supermarket. I saw an elderly woman lying half in the road, half on the pavement. She had a walker with her. She wasn’t moving.

“There was a gentleman at her side keeping her warm with blankets and a woman brought some pillows.

“There were quite a lot of people there - around 10 people stood around her so we didn’t stop.

“On my way back from the supermarket the ambulance was at the scene.

“Someone had parked up and was directing traffic. There were a few more cars parked around preventing her getting injured further.”

West Yorkshire Police said: “We were called at 11.26am to reports of a collision between a female pedestrian and a car.

“The woman suffered leg injuries and has been taken to hospital.”

Residents of homes on Hudders- field Road said they had been complaining about speeding for years but nothing had been done.

The part of the main road close to Meltham village centre is a 30mph zone but one mum said many motorists continued to drive at 40mph and she was concerned a child would be hurt before the authorities would act.
