- By TONY EARNSHAW, ANNIE GOUK & CHARLIE FILMER-COURT

ST Patrick’s Catholic Primary School in Birstall is the best-performing primary school in Kirklees, with almost every pupil meeting expected levels of reading, writing and maths.

The latest Key Stage 2 results have shown that 94% of pupils in the school reached the expected standard in core subjects this year - the highest proportion in the borough.

At the end of year six, pupils take national curriculum assessments (more commonly known as SATs), which cover reading, maths, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

They must also complete a teacher assessment in reading, writing, maths and science.

To reach the expected standard, pupils must achieve a scaled score of 100 or more in their reading and maths tests, as well as being judged to be either ‘reaching the expected standard’ or ‘working at greater depth’ in the writing teacher assessment.

Other schools that performed particularly well included Carlton Junior and Infant School in Dewsbury, where 90% of pupils met the expected levels, Hopton Primary School in Mirfield (90%), St Peter’s Church of England Voluntary Aided Junior, Infant and Early Years School in Batley (88%) and Rowley Lane Junior Infant & Nursery School in Lepton, (84%).

Meanwhile, Hade Edge Junior & Infant School in Holmfirth saw 25% of students achieving a high score in reading, writing and maths, which means they scored 110 or more in their tests and an outcome of ‘working at greater depth’ in their writing teacher assessment. This was the highest proportion in the whole of Kirklees.

Other schools with a high proportion of pupils achieving a high score in their assessments included St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School in Birstall (24%) and Hopton Primary School in Mirfield (24%).
