Lawrence striving to claim silverware

- By CONOR MURPHY

MICHAEL Lawrence believes Huddersfield Giants are right to be targeting silverware next season.

Head coach Simon Woolford is building and impressive-looking side for a crack at the Super League crown, especially with the addition of NRL stars Matthew Frawley and Akuila Uate.

The first chance Giants fans will have to see the now boys in action will be Lawrence’s testimonial match against Bradford on January 13.

And having been working with them in pre-season, Lawrence is expecting some good things from the pair – and the squad as a whole.

He said: “Everyone’s working hard, we’re putting some good work in training and practicing on the field. We’re just getting ready for round one of the season.

“Everything’s going in the right direction.

“Matt and Akuila have been great. Akuila is a ball of energy and he’s been great to have around.

“He’s going to be great for us next year.

“Matt’s stepped in as our half-back and he’s been showing his skills.

“I’m looking forward to him leading us round the park next year and I think he’s going to be a key player for us.

“I think the others are settling in well, they’re going to add quality and competition for places.”

And Bruno is adamant silverware remains the aim for the new season, delivering the first major trophy to the club since the 2013 season.

He said: “We want to do as well as possible. We’ve got our goals that we want to achieve, most importantly is bettering last year.

“Fundamentally though, our major aim is to win a piece of silverware. I think that’s what all clubs want to achieve. That’s what we’re striving for.

“We know it’s a process and we take it one game at a time, but we think we can achieve that.”

But before the Super League action starts, Lawrence – who has been with the Giants for his whole career – can’t wait for his testimonial match.

He said: “I’m excited and proud of the achievement of being granted a testimonial.

“Looking forward to the game against Bradford, hopefully the weather is good, and we have a good crowd down there.

“It will be the first chance for supporters to see the new players and the 2019 team in action so should be a great day out and I’d love supporters to come out and support it.”
