Taxi driver cut free from cab after collision
MAN TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER SUSTAINING BACK AND HIP INJURIES IN EARLY MORNING CRASH
A TAXI driver in his 20s had to be cut free from his cab after a collision with another car at a busy junction.
The driver from Mount Taxis in Marsh was trapped behind the wheel of his Skoda – and it was claimed the other driver fled the scene.
Emergency services were called to the smash in Bradford Road, Batley, yesterday morning after the Skoda and an Audi A3 were in collision.
Firefighters freed the taxi driver before he was taken by ambulance to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
The road was temporarily blocked as both cars were recovered, and reopened shortly before noon.
Watch commander Kevin Walsh, of Dewsbury Fire Station, said: “One car t-boned another and we had to cut the taxi driver out. He didn’t seem to be badly injured. He had back and hip injuries but he was talking.”
West Yorkshire Police, meanwhile, said it was reported to them that the other driver fled the scene, but said they were unable to confirm this.
A force spokesman said: “We were called at 9.44am to Bradford Road and the junction of Batley Field Hill.
“A man in his 20s was trapped and had to be cut from his vehicle. The fire service attended and freed the man and he was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to be treated.
“We received a call from a member of the public to say one of the drivers did not stay at the scene.” This was unconfirmed, she said.
The road re-opened at 11.37am.
Mount Taxis confirmed the driver worked for the company.
