HAVE YOUR SAY ON BIG ISSUES

-

Come on Kirklees don’t make a mess

of this one, let them get on with it quickly before they

change their mind! Can’t be any worse than that derelict

pub that has been say there 10-plus years being

an eyesore. Sainsbury’s will be fuming. Noel Edmonds TV presenter,

Ralph Fiennes, actor, Dan Petrescu,

former footballer and manager, Gary Anderson,

darts player, Vanessa Paradis

actress/ model, Leigh Halfpenny, Welsh

rugby player, Jordin Sparks, singer, James Stuart, the ‘Old Pretender’,

landed at Peterhead to lead a Jacobite rebellion.

It failed. Lincoln’s Inn Theatre, London, put

on England’s first pantomime, which included Harlequin, Columbine and Pantaloon.

Giacomo Puccini, Italian composer

of popular operas including La Boheme,

Madame Butterfly and Turandot, which he never

completed, was born in Lucca.

Alfred Dreyfus, French officerfound selling guilty of military secrets, was sent to Devil’s

Island. Innocent of the crime, he was eventually exonerated.

Wilhelm Roentgen made the first radiograph, or X-ray - of his wife’s hand.

The British Ministry of Pensions was established.

A fish identified as acoelacanth, thought have been to

extinct for 65 million years, was caught by a fisherman offthe coast of South

Africa. THANK you to the 30 h ardy souls who turned out to ques - tion Clr Gr aham T urner, the Kirklees councillor r esponsible for corporate government.

The councillor is minded to close Almondbury’s 1905 C arnegie Libr ary and mo ve libr ary services to the old Almondbury Children’s Centre.

Fair play to him for turning up and facing a volley of hostile questions, but I do hope he took in the weigh t of feeling ag ainst the proposed move.

He did a t one stage concede that if the Almondbury Libr ary Friends’ Association ( ALFA), who org anise the volun teers to All letters and emails must include your full address, though this will

1GQ or email: work w ith the one paid par ttime wor ker, can open the cur - rent libr ary for longer , then he could think about his decision – if he was minded to keep the library where it is.

The present thinking of library services seems to h ave divided Almondbury rather than uniting it.

My opinion is th at A LFA h as workedhardtomakeuseof what is available.

The members would be reluctant to mo ve and some of the activities cur rently taking place will not transfer down.

Arrangements are being made A BIG thank you to the organisers at Carers Count for a splendid day out to the Manchester Christmas markets and the lights.

Years ago it was unusual to ask “who cares for the carer” but over recent years the stress endured by carers and the valuable work they do – not withstanding the money they save the to use facilities in wh at they see as the heart of the village.

Clr T urner pr obably thinks that the libr ary should h ave been the subject of an asset transfer.

That migh t still h appen, but the people I deal w ith on a da yto-day basis are more interested in comm unity activities r ather than being landlords.

Let us hope th at if the libr ary moves it does not quickly fade away because of lack of community interest. government has been realised.

Caring for the carers by Carers Count with outings and exercise classes, as well as informative courses, helps make life easier for the carer.

So a big thank you and a Merry Christmas to the staff for all that they do!

Waterloo THE recent even ts in Fr ance regarding the so-called Y ellow Vest r iots should be a wak e-up call to our blinker ed politicians who clamour for a second r eferendum – aka The People’s Vote.

The Fr ench citizens sho wed exactly ho w they felt to wards their go vernment and, all par - ties acr oss the political spec - trum here should take note.

We, the Br itish people, do not want another vote , nor do we want pa tronising politicos tell - ing us what’s right for us regarding the EU, or ho w ignor ant we were to vote to leave.

I knew exactly wh at I voted for, to leave.

The o verturning of the 2016 result w ill r esult in far worse than deal or no deal, it w ill be the end of democr acy as we know it, and, should our gutless politicians h ave their wa y, the start of r iots etc on a scale unseen in this gr eat n ation we call home.
