Keeper says team has to stick together now

- By STEVEN DOWNES

can’t perform on our highest level, then we can’t collect points.

“This happened today in the first half, the first time in a very long period that we didn’t perform on the level which we can.”

So do Town have enough time to correct things and climb away from trouble with the injuries they have?

“We have every chance with 20 games to play - that means 20 chances to collect points,” he answered.

“At the minute in midfield we are not very comfortable on numbers, losing Hoggy today, making if four midfielders gone in roughly two weeks.

“This is not easy, but everybody tried his best. And we believe in every single one of our players.

“It isn’t a case of effort and it isn’t a case of attitude or fighting spirit. Today it was a case of bravery. We weren’t brave enough in the first half in ball possession. The pressure which people have spoken about affected us. We have to make sure this doesn’t happen, because we have to perform on our highest level. We have to change this and be independent of the circumstances.

“If we are not on our best level we will not collect points. We have to learn the lesson. It is all about our performance.” JONAS Lossl believes the Huddersfield Town players must stick together and show they have the character and determination to stay in the Premier League.

Town crashed 3-1 to relegation rivals Southampton - a fifth straight defeat - and Lossl admitted it was the lowest point of his time at the club.

He said: “It is definitely the worst point which we have had in the 18 months that I have been here but I think now that we have to show what character we have in the team.

“I think we have to stand together and as a club as well.

“These guys in the stands are loyal as always and we need them, we really do need them to believe as well as us.

“You saw in moments in the second half what really makes all of us stand together and I do really think we can turn this around, because performance wise we have performed very well during the season and we have the quality in the team.”

The Danish international keeper said he “didn’t want to go down” and the fight back started with the players with support from the terraces.

“I don’t want to go down so I want to turn it around and to do that I need to keep positive, and we need to as a team as well,” he said.

“We need to stick together and show what character we have.”

Asked what the players needed to do to turn the form around, Lossl added: “To continue working hard, which we do every day.

“We work our butts off in training every day around the club.

“Most of all we keep on believing that we can turn it, we know we can, we know we have the quality, we will just work even harder.”

On the defeat to Southampton Lossl said: “We lost the game in the first half. We didn’t play well enough, we just didn’t really get into our game. We couldn’t find those pockets that we wanted, that passing game that we wanted.

“They pressed us well in the first half and we made some mistakes at the back as well. I think when we came out in the second half and got that first goal, you saw the energy of the team. I think you felt it as well like the rest of the crowd did, that was how we should have played in the first half.

“We got the goal that we needed to really get that energy. We were close to turning the game around.

“We do meet different opponents every week and I will say that they came out very aggressive with high pressure, which made it difficult for us to get a hold of our game.

“I am not blaming them only because we need to deliver better. We need to sit down and get an overview of what happened.

“Right now it is disappointment as we knew this was an opportunity.”

Back-to-back defeats against relegation rivals Newcastle and Saints have left Town firmly entrenched in the bottom three.

Next up for the Terriers is a visit to Old Trafford on Boxing Day to face a Manchester United side with a new manager in the wake of the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Asked if the changes at Old Trafford meant Town faced an even greater challenge on Boxing Day, Lossl said: “Let’s see, ask me again in a few days’ time. Let’s hope we can turn this around quickly. We need to go and prepare for a very big match that we know will be difficult. We did very well at Arsenal away so why not at United?

“Of course when you look at the season you look at certain games and know which are the teams you are going to struggle against.”
