Come on council workers, it’s time to work a full week

Yeah he shouldn’t have rung 999 however I agree that the wait times are shameful. I know its not their fault but sometimes they are shocking...

I had a friend who fell while she was pregnant and was in very bad pain. Rung ambulance as she couldn’t move with the pain. They told us they’d be on the way asap and not to move her in case there was internal damage. The floor was wet and it was freezing. An hour later no show ... 2 hours, no show ... police were going past and stopped to see if we were being helped. We told them how long she’d been laid on the floor for, and her body had gone into shock and she was shivering bad. We told the police they not to move her but they insisted to move her into the building next to us instead of her being on the floor. She was even slipping in and out of sleep....... 3 hours later ... still no show ... she had to go in a taxi as 4 hours later ... still no show. Even the police were shocked ... My mum is disabled and she’d took a fall outside and banged her head on the concrete and was bleeding. My dad rung ambulance which told him 2 hours ... he ended up taking her up in taxi. This is the very reason I have a care phone. In case of emergency they come out and pick you up off the floor and if you are injured you get an ambulance immediately. Maybe she should consider this service. ONCE again Kirklees has been targeted by this dreadful Government, or at least that seems to be the viewpoint of deputy Labour group leader Clr David Sheard.

Indeed, reading the report in the Examiner of December 20, it seems Mr Sheard considers it to be personal.

I fail to see the problem that he claims. Currently waste collection takes place four days a week which means the vehicles are stood idle for three. That is not very good utilisation of resources. Whilst the council and many of its employees might like working four-day weeks, out in the real world many people have to work far more, and that includes weekends. Why should waste collection be any different?

In the article it says “new bin wagons and street sweepers are also amongst the hundreds of vehicles costing £4m as Kirklees updates its fleet”. I fail to see that comment as being relevant ; any responsible fleet operator has maintenance and replacement programmes. On the financial implications, the government has already indicated that councils such as Kirklees will be given extra cash to improve their waste and recycling systems.
