Team spirit will be the key to staying in Premier

- By MEL BOOTH @examinerHTAFC

PEOPLE talk about Boxing Day and New Year these days as the festive fixtures.

But fans of a younger generation may be surprised to learn that Christmas Day football was, for many, many years, a regular feature of the English League calendar.

Huddersfield Town, in common with everyone else, played most seasons on December 25 - although it is 60 years since they last turned out on that particular date.

And while it would seem outlandish these days to entertain such a HUDDERSFIELD Town’s team spirit can be their secret weapon in their bid to survive in the Premier League, according to Elias Kachunga.

The striker returned to the side which lost to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, having featured just once since the 3-1 defeat at Leicester City.

And although Town slumped to the bottom of the table with the defeat, Kachunga believes the spirit in the dressing room will be key if they are to rise out of the bottom three in the second half of the season.

He said: “It’s really important. Everyone saw against United we were 2-0 down, but we kept trying to score a goal.

“We got the goal and everyone showed on the pitch that we are still a team.

“No one had their head down and everyone was playing properly.

“We tried everything and, hopefully, the supporters saw this as well.

“Every one of the players gave everything on the pitch and we need the supporters in the next games to push us forward and give us energy.

“Our supporters were unbelievable and stayed behind us for the whole game.

“We have to keep going and try everything to get the points.”

“It is again a heavy defeat for us, but we played a good game and had our chances to get 1-0 up or score for 1-1 but, at the end, we lost the game again.

“We have to take the positive things out of this game and move on.

“We have the next game in three days so we don’t have to think so much about the bad things, just take the positive things and move forward.”
