League insists striker Kachunga

Glazzard was on target again down in Wales in a 3-3 draw, Davie and Alistair Gunn also on the scoresheet - and remember, travelling to the far side of Wales in those days didn’t mean popping down the motorway!

Later that season, Glazzard scored his famous four goals in the 8-2 Leeds Road win against Everton at Easter.

All those goals came from Metcalfe crosses and the winger was a seventh ever-present in the team (Glazzard missing only the final game, otherwise it would have been eight).

Sunderland and Middlesbrough also featured on the list of Christmas opposition in the 1950s before Town’s final match on that date.

That was in the 1958-59 season, when Charlton visited Leeds Road

Town once again created plenty of chances at Old Trafford, but were unable to convert - a regular problem for them this season.

“Everyone has to work on putting the ball in the net so we get a good feeling on the pitch,” said Kachunga, who was Town’s leading scorer in the 2016/17 campaign.

“We have to work on being more clinical in front of goal week by week, but the good thing is that we created on the 25th and lost 1-0 to a Stan Howard goal. Town played the return at The Valley on the 27th and lost 2-1 with Les Massie their scorer.

A member of Town’s final Christmas Day side was Denis Law.

He was 18 at the time, and the brilliance of Law had previously captured the attention of Scotland’s selectors, who had made him the youngest player of the 20th century to play for his country.

They had left him out of the 1958 World Cup, but he made a scoring debut against Wales at Ninian Park on October 18 and quickly became established.

He went on to become a football legend, of course, and his 30 goals for Scotland is still a joint record held with Kenny Dalglish. chances. Now we just have to finish them.”

Having struggled to secure a place in the side, Kachunga is keen to keep his spot after his Old Trafford appearance.

He said: “I have always been a player who fights for this club and gives everything on the pitch.

“I am happy I am now back and played against Man United.

“Hopefully I can help the team in the next games with my fighting spirit and with everything else I have.

“I have worked really hard to get back into the side. Everyone who knows me knows I always work hard to get back in the team.

“It was not the easiest period for me at this club to not be on the pitch for such a long time, but now I am back.

“Now I will try everything to stay in the team and help the team with my performances.”
