Poo Fairy message goes out to owners

DOG WALKERS URGED TO CLEAR UP

A MYSTERY walker has left sarcastic messages on walls near Longwood Edge telling inconsiderate dog walkers there is no ‘Poo Fairy’ and to clean up their mess.

The area is a favourite with dog walkers with magnificent views across Huddersfield.

One walker, David Smith, 39, of Marsh, who was enjoying walking his whippet, Sweet Lady, said: “Well done to whoever has done this, it’s time someone took a stand and did something about it.”

But another walker, Cath Conroy, from Lindley, said: “I agree that dog owners should clear up after themselves, but the problem is that a lot of walkers like to take their dogs off their leads and they can run around and do their busi- ness with the owner being none the wiser about where it’s been deposited.”

And another man from Longwood, who didn’t want to be named, said: “The other problem is that there is no dedicated ‘poo bin’ and the nearest normal bin is near Witches Wood, near Salendine Nook.”

Kirklees councillor Cahal Burke, (Lindley, Lib Dem), said: “Unfortunately dog waste issues are a never ending problem. Along with practical solutions we need to change attitudes.

“The vast majority of dog owners are responsible, however the inconsiderate minority who fail to clean up after their dogs show total disregard for the community.

“Keeping our communities clean and safe is important to me. I and colleagues are involved in many ‘clean up’ days to tackle these problems and acknowledge the efforts taken by residents to keep our areas free from dog waste.

“I will be working with colleagues and officers to see what steps can be taken with regards to enforcement and changing behaviours.”
