Back row Giant has eyes firmly on a Grand prize
ALEX Mellor is confident that the Huddersfield Giants can carry their good foundations from pre-season into their 2019 campaign.
“We’ve had a really good pre-season, it’s been tough, but we’ve laid down some great foundations and we’re feeling confident and ready to get the ball rolling,” he said.
Mellor had an excellent season last term, scoring a personal record of seven tries and putting in some eye-catching performances. But personal targets are not the focus for Mellor, who’s seeking to do something no player in the Claret and Gold has done – win a Grand Final at Old Trafford in October.
“I’m always looking to better myself and maintain my consistency in the squad, but I think it’s less a personal goal and more of a team goal – I want to win something here,” said Mellor.
“It’s something that we’re striving to achieve and it’s a personal goal of mine to win a Grand Final. I think we’ve got a good chance to do that, we’ve put ourselves in a good position to do that.”
The squad is looking well equipped for a challenge, with marquee import Akuila Uate one of several new faces in the squad.
Signings including Matt Frawley and mid-season additions such as Tom Holmes and Suaia Matagi have bolstered the line-up for 2019. “We’ve made some great signings, it’s really complimented us, and it’s helped us in areas we needed help in,” said Mellor. “It’s got to be a stepping stone to achieve more.”
The back-rower has found himself bedded in with the Claret and Gold and is appreciating his time at the club.
“I think that’s natural, you get into the swing of things, learn the ways of the club,” he said.
“When I first arrived, I’d only been a one-club man but now I feel like I’ve really settled in and now I’ve been here a while, I think I am getting a bit older and becoming more experienced.”
