Pundit doesn’t see a way out for Town

-

SKY Sports pundit Paul Merson believes there is ‘no point’ in Town spending money in the January transfer window.

The former Arsenal forward believes the Terriers will be relegated at the end of the 2018/19 campaign and claimed they should not splash out vast quantities of cash in the hope that they can pull off a miraculous escape come May 12.

The 50-year-old went on to suggest that Town would struggle to attract players given their current situation, which sees them languishing at the foot of the top-flight table – eight points adrift of safety.

When asked if the Town fairytale was over, the pundit responded: “Yeah, eight on the trot and they’re losing to the teams around them, it’s not like they’re getting beat by the top six.

“Getting beat by Burnley – I don’t see the point going into the transfer market.

“There’s no point paying £30m or £40m for players or even £10 or £12m. They might as well swallow a pill now.”

Jeff Stelling added that the Terriers may find it hard to persuade players to sign for Town in their current position, to which Merson replied: “Yeah, and then you’re talking half your wages.

“The deal will be ‘we’ll give you this a week, but as soon as you get relegated that’s going to be cut in half.

“Players are not going to go. It’s a shame, really.”
