SINGER FINDS SUCCESS IN PAINTING

HE is best known as a talented singer-songwriter.

But long before Roger Davies got serious about music, he was a seriously good painter.

And now some of his artwork with a Huddersfield Town theme has gone on show.

Roger, of Brighouse, said: “I left art school in the year 2000 to concentrate on my music.

“I have been lucky enough to have a successful music career for 16 years and then, in 2017, I decided to take up painting again.

“It was actually the morning after my 40th birthday that I picked the brush back up.”

Roger had been building up ideas for artistic works for a while but until a couple of years ago thought he ‘didn’t have enough stories to tell’.

That has though as Roger has been producing well received art, based on his love of the area and of the Terriers, for around a year-and-a-half.

He said: “I had my first exhibition at the Harrison Lord Gallery in Brighouse in March 2018 and, amazingly, they went down really well.”

Those paintings all sold and Roger became a featured artist at the gallery.

“Really, you’re very lucky if you get taken on by a gallery,” said Roger. “It means you’ve got somewhere to show your work and you have the support from the team there.

“I’m fortunate to be in a position to now be able to paint pretty much every day. I hope to keep going with it for as long as I can.”

Many of Roger’s paintings depict Town supporters on their way to a match or milling around the John Smith’s Stadium.

“It has become a bit of a theme,” said Roger. “I am a fan of the club and painting Terriers helps me to put figures in locations I’ve always wanted to paint – iconic places you only find in our area.

“Like the Merrie England cafe, for example. I might paint some Terriers going in there for a cup of tea before the game. Or I can paint them all piling into the John Smith’s Stadium for the match.”

“I live in Brighouse but Huddersfield has always been important to me. I’ve written a lot of songs about it and this is the same. Telling stories about these places and celebrating the local area.”

Some of Roger’s paintings can still be seen at the Harrison Lord Gallery. He is currently working on another show at the Brighouse gallery in May 2019.

Fans of Roger’s music don’t need to worry. He plans to keep writing and performing new music and Roger Davies and His Band have an upcoming concert at the Square Chapel Centre For The Arts in Halifax on Friday, March 22.
