Build something but not at cost of hill’s character

-

Worked with James years ago. Always a smile on his face even on a busy Saturday night dealing with the happy people of Huddersfield out drinking in Johnny’s. RIP to a top man. Arthur Scargill (pictured), former mineworkers’ union leader, 81; Anna Calder-Marshall, actress, 72; Ben Crenshaw, golfer, 67; John Sessions, comic/actor, 66; Phyllis Logan, actress, 63; Bryan Robson, football manager, 62; Jason Connery, actor, 56; Mary J Blige (pictured), rap singer, 48. AFTER the recent Strategic Planning Meeting the question was asked of me: How can a planning committee accept the principle of building in the Green Belt when, according to national guidelines, no building should be allowed there unless “special reasons” can be shown why it should happen?

Council papers were clear on one point. There are no special reasons to support the aircraft hangar style building on the hill. But the only way it looks as though a building would go on Castle Hill is if a private developer is allowed to make enough profit to support a visitor centre on the hill.

This is obviously not a special reason for development.

To me and to others, it seems clear that something ought to be there on the hill but not at the expense of the character of the hill, the despoiling of the Green Belt and the burden of extra traffic on what are already inadequate roads.

Obviously another attempt will be made to get a different plan through the Strategic Planning Committee.

In my opinion nothing should be allowed on the hill that is there purely for profit, as that would not be a good omen for the emerging Local Development Plan which designates it as off limits to commercial building. held up queuing while the front customer is on their mobile phone?

I was recently in a supermarket when a woman was being served, all at once her mobile rang. I had quite a long wait along with other people while she chatted on her phone. The person on the till looked quite annoyed as well.

Should people not ignore the mobile when other people are waiting to be served and should they be allowed to use them in stores? HAS the UK fallen for the five card trick in voting to leave Europe?

Two world wars won and now Merkel’s Germany has seized on a chance to bring this country to its knees by giving us a deal that would not be accepted.

Of course Europe will lose out as well but they have 26 allies and far more unity than our chaotic politicians.

Perhaps they have only tolerated us because they have looked upon us as a money machine, and getting our own way has been an uphill battle.

Brexit is like a spy story, so many twists and turns, not to find the solution till the last page – in a world where no-one is surprised anymore, and many a true word is spoken in jest.
