‘Blast not terror-related’

Two drivers told how they aquaplaned and lost control at low speeds.

Three years ago Kirklees Council issued an emergency order to shut the B6118 - along with Highgate Lane, Moor Top Road, Upper Heaton Road, Bog Green Lane and part of Colne Bridge Road to remove mud and other debris via a “deep clean” of the road surface using a powerwashi­ng vehicle.

The council concentrat­ed on the length between Cockley Hill Lane and the Hare and Hounds pub.

Anti-slip surfacing was laid on some of the worst stretches.

New accident warning installed. DETECTIVES investigat­ing an explosion in Batley which left five men in hospital say it’s not believed to be terror-related.

Five men in their late 30s were seriously injured in the blast at a grade-II listed former pub and bank recently converted into flats.

The blast happened at 6.30pm on Wednesday with emergency services and a military bomb disposal team called out.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Five males aged between 35 and 39 suffered burn injuries and remain in hospital.”

Det Supt Pat Twiggs added: “We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst we establish the full circumstan­ces. At this stage we are not treating it as a terrorist incident.”
