A MAN punched his partner and spat at her because he thought she was going to pour cold water on him.

Ryan Hirst called her a ‘fat scrounger’ and assaulted her during a row at her Meltham home.

He claimed he believed she was going to pour water on him to get him out of bed, as she had done previously.

Hirst, 30, of Ballroyd Lane, Longwood, pleaded guilty to assault by beating when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Natalie Chapman said that on the evening of January 5 Hirst was staying over at the victim’s home.

She told magistrates: “There was a row and she asked him to leave but he said he didn’t want to.

“He then followed her upstairs and shouted at her, calling her a ‘fat scrounger.’

“He leaned back and spat in her face. Then he punched her in the leg and walked downstairs.”

Magistrates were told that the couple had been in a relationship together for five years and had two children.

Carl Kingsley, mitigating, explained that from his client’s point of view their relationship should have ended a long time ago but they carried on for the sake of the children.

He said that Hirst’s version of what happened was different to his partner’s. He told magistrates that the couple were in bed together when the victim started complaining that Hirst needed to deal with their children.

Mr Kingsley said: “He was tired and declined to do so. Then she went to the bathroom, got a pint of cold water and shouted at him.

“She’d previously thrown water at him to get him out of bed and he thought that was what she was going to do.

“He got out of bed and hit her – like a stab without the knife – to the top of the leg.

Magistrates said they needed a probation report before sentencing Hirst.
