EEP calm and carry on!

The British motto holds very true for the Eurovision Song Contest, which we gamely take part in every year, hanging onto the dream that one day we’ll win again.

Our 1997 success with Katrina and the Waves seems an awfully long time ago now.

But onwards, and in spite of the threat of Brexit, it’s time to put ourselves forward in this European competition while we still can.

Last year the UK’s entry was SuRie, who crashed out in 24th place out of 26, having bravely carried on despite a man storming the stage and shouting into the microphone. But tonight you have a chance to vote for 2019’s entry. And fingers crossed for more than nil points when the time comes.

Mel Giedroyc is joined by Swedish pop star and 2015 winner Mans Zelmerlow, broadcasting live from MediaCity UK in Salford.

There is a brand new format too. From the hundreds of songs that have been submitted, three will be performed on the night by six different artists.

The six acts will compete for the honour of representing the UK at the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv in May.

A celebrity panel and viewers at home will make the ultimate decision.

Watch out for a live performance e from Mans, as well as some other surprises. The biggest surprise of course will be if any of the acts are e any good...
