A MAN from Mirfield has appeared in court accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend with a bottle at a nightclub.

The victim suffered a substantial wound to her arm following the incident at the TBC club in Batley, Kirklees magistrates were told.

Joel Shaw, of Westway on London Park Estate, Mirfield, denies assaulting her and causing damage to a police car and a body-worn camera during his arrest.

Magistrates heard that the victim was at the Bradford Road club late on August 4 last year.

Prosecutor Natalie Chapman said that 21-year-old Shaw was also there and dancing with another girl.

His ex took a dislike to that and pushed him, the Huddersfield court was told.

Shaw allegedly responded by throwing his bottle of beer at her.

The victim suffered a large gash to her arm which needed to be closed with steri-strips, Miss Chapman said.

Shaw then allegedly thew a bar stool and damaged a window at the club. Police were called and he resisted their efforts to arrest him, damaging a vehicle belonging to them as well as a body-worn camera used to capture the incident, Miss Chapman said.

Shaw pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, resisting a PC in the execution of his duty, four charges of criminal damage and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

Magistrates were asked to decline jurisdiction due to the seriousness of the injury caused and the alleged use of a bottle for a weapon.

They sent Shaw’s case to Leeds Crown Court, where he will first appear on March 5.

In the meantime he has bail conditions not to go to the TBC nightclub or contact the complainant and other witnesses.
