Ten hidden gems in our town centre

SSSSH...FROM COOL TO KOOKY, SUSIE BEEVER SEEKS OUT OUR BEST-KEPT SECRETS

HUDDERSFIELD town centre.

We all know it’s not Oxford Street. But the truth is, our high street actually has a lot to offer in the way of boutiques, bars and bespoke coffee shops.

You just have to get out there and look for them.

The town centre bears lots of independent shops and watering holes that you may have walked past hundreds of times while moaning “all there is is Nando’s and Costa”.

So here’s a list of those places tucked down ginnels, nestled in cosy basements or just around corners or roads less ventured.

Just don’t tell everyone we told you. A new addition to Huddersfield’s growing coffee scene, The Clock House is not visible to most walking up and down the cobbles of King Street.

But nosey down the little yards branching off it is this cosy coffee shop and cafe with its own outdoor seating area.

But it is still putting on a great night for those who love a different music scene to the top floor of Tokyo.

Small Seeds is a (surprise, surprise) small, independent venue hosting weekly jazz nights, with live music every Friday as well as an open mic acoustic club on Tuesday evenings.

Plus, it’s been all decked out with a fake tree and canopied in leaves, because what better way to enjoy live music and a pint than while sitting in a cosy Scandinavian forest? BENEATH the streets of Huddersfield, there is a place housing zombies, mummies, and just about every sci-fi character you could imagine.

And no, it’s not Camel Club on a Wednesday night at 2am. Ka-Pow! is a true joy for any comic book fans and sells all the new releases and merchandise.

It even has a couple of cosy chairs to chill out in and peruse, while the friendly and knowledgeable staff host a regular podcast on all things comic book.
