ble economy – this includes attracting investment and supporting private sector investors.

“We are very aware of the George Hotel’s sporting history and its status as a landmark building.

“We are keen to see the building brought back into use and we continue to work with the owners on making this happen.

“It’s fantastic news for the district that we were successful in bringing the Rugby League World Cup to Huddersfield. Hosting a men’s quarter-final will boost the local economy, promote healthy lifestyles and place Kirklees on a global stage.” READERS have had their say on the future of the George Hotel building.

More than 100 people commented on our story about an online petition calling on Kirklees Council to step in and save the landmark disused building from ruin on the Examiner website.

On our Facebook page, readers cast doubt on whether Kirklees has the cash to take on the building.

Tracey McKevitt said: “Kirklees just do not have the money. Who would invest when the negativity about this town from the people in this town is rife?”

Jan Muskett said: “Kirklees Council should be proud and pleased to buy and restore this hotel and start to bring some pride and respect back to Huddersfield.”

Rob Lewis commented: “Kirklees isn’t going to compulsory purchase it as they can’t look after the buildings they are custodians for as it is, and the ones they do, they run them down and demolish them.”

Ian Pickup said: “Kirklees should get involved and push the owner to submit plans or face compulsory purchase, the same with Castle Hill.”

Sammy Hall added: “Pull it down. Huddersfield town centre is so depressing and such a sad place. Or turn it into student accommodation.”

Twitter user @colfonz added: “It will need some serious money spending and there is not enough trade to sustain it. Not a tourist town, not a party town, not a business town. Council needs to stimulate the town’s economy and then someone will take on the hotel as a worthwhile investment.”
