GLENN CLOSE looks likely to be an Oscar winner for her performance in The Wife at this month’s Academy Awards. Nominated six times before, she is an awards ceremony pro and I’m as excited to see her red carpet ensemble as I am the next Hollywood starlet’s. The only difference is, Glenn Close is having her fashion moment aged 71.

With her silver hair and confident style the septuagenarian is showing the world that it’s not just men who get better with age. And she’s not the only one, Susan Sarandon (72) Helen Mirren (73), Diane Keaton (73), Meryl Streep (69) and Julie Walters (68) are all examples of incredible women in the film industry who are well past retirement age, but still outshining actors half their age.

Admittedly, they are well preserved thanks to the secrets of the world’s best beauticians, make up artists and stylists, but, Hollywood polish aside these, women own their grey hair and wrinkles and prove style isn’t something that lessens with age. If anything, these women hit their stride at mid life. Helen Mirren was labelled

“sexy” in both

Qher younger days and in her sixties when pictured looking amazing in a red bikini.

Diane Keaton might have form as 70s style icon Annie Hall, but she’s never looked better than today.

The benefits of amazing make-up and a great hairdresser are undeniable, but her appeal is not because she’s defying her age, her hair is grey and her skin is lined, it’s her exuberant smile and self-assured poise that’s so attractive – and that’s before she’s spoken

(let’s not forget the merits of being witty, intelligent, charming and kind).

Age may be just a number, but it’s undeniable that, as women in the public eye get older, they are judged more harshly. Men aren’t subject to the same scrutiny, nor do they face the same pressure to maintain their looks.

I admire these women, they are ripping up the rule book of what’s expected of “women of a certain age”.

No twin set and pearls for Susan Sarandon and her impressive cleavage, no matronly dresses for 82-year-old

Jane Fonda, why shouldn’t she wear body con with that figure?

Roll on the Oscars, here come the girls. I HAVE two young children and recently started my own business working from home, I need easy daytime clothes that look stylish to stop me wearing leggings!

away from the leggings. Gym gear has its place but try a jumpsuit, no messing with separates and you can layer for warmth, just add trainers. The Emmeline jumpsuit from Boden is the perfect example of comfort without style compromise.
