Van man cheats death
SHOCKING pictures show how a van driver cheated death by inches after a metal fencing pole smashed through his windscreen.
The red Vauxhall van careered off the road and hit the barriers on Lowergate in Paddock yesterday.
The impact crushed the metal bars which speared the windscreen.
Police said the 62-year-old driver had a “lucky escape.” He appeared unhurt but badly shaken.
The metal barrier stopped the van from crashing off the road and plunging down a steep banking on the road that winds down towards Milnsbridge.
The pictures were tweeted by Pc Dave Cant, a road traffic officer for West Yorkshire Police, who described the driver, who is from Huddersfield, as the “luckiest man ever”.
The crash happened yesterday afternoon and recovery was quickly arranged, while Kirklees Council highways officers were called to the scene to repair the barriers.
