Couple dead in horror crash were ‘married for 7 decades’

-

THIS is the couple married for more than seven decades who tragically died together in an horrific car crash.

Eric and Marion Walsh, both in their 90s, were killed when a Kia collided with their Skoda Octavia on Halifax Road at Scholes, near Cleckheaton, on Monday of last week.

The Kia driver escaped uninjured. The couple, from Bailiff Bridge, died at the scene. Tributes paid by members of their community described them as a “lovely couple” who were always together.

Mr Walsh, 93, had served in the military and his 90-year-old wife was described as a caring neighbour who always called in on others.

It is understood the couple had been married for more than 70 years.

West Yorkshire Police released the picture of the couple and named them for the first time as they issued a new appeal for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

Officers also want to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the collision or of either vehicle in the run-up to what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log number 717 of February 4.

Passing driver Carl Lewis, 24, of Lindley, told the Examiner how he desperately tried to save the lives of the couple but there was little he could do.

Rita Carr-Reason paid tribute to the couple and said: “They were just such nice people, lovely and friendly people who got along with everyone.”
