THE driver of a pick-up truck caught weaving between lanes on the M62 was double the drinkdrive limit.

Concerned members of the public called police after spotting Ashley Bescoby’s Fiat Fullback Cross on the westbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 23 and 22 on January 20.

Prosecutor Vanessa Jones told Kirklees magistrates: “The car was seen with damage to the rear of it and weaving between lanes.

“Officers on patrol saw the vehicle, which came to stop on the hard shoulder. It was travelling at 45mph and Mr Bescoby was the only occupant.”

The officers could smell alcohol on the 33-year-old’s breath and he was arrested after failing a roadside breath test.

Further tests at Huddersfield Police Station showed that he had 70 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

This is double the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Bescoby, who held no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to driving while over the prescribed limit.

He explained that at the time he was in and out of hospital with his young son and also had a demanding job as a project manager working at various airports around the UK.

Bescoby, who was not represented, told magistrates: “This has taken its toll on me and impaired my judgement and character on that night.

“I’ve been let go from my job because of this situation.”

He said that he was also angry and upset that night because his sister was the victim of an assault.

Magistrates banned Bescoby, of Ashby Grove in Bury, from driving for 20 months.

He was fined £40 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs, plus £30 victim surcharge.
