Terriers use a cup break to move up into mid-table spot

- TABLE TENNIS By ROGER WOOD

A BREAK in the league season for cup matches has provided an opportunity for teams to catch up with outstanding league matches.

In Division One of the Filedoc Huddersfield Table Tennis League, Marsh Terriers have had to postpone a number of matches due to work commitments, but over the past two weeks have played three outstanding fixtures – beating Greetland and narrowly losing to Wilshaw A and Kingsmith Engineering A – to move into a comfortable mid-table position.

In Division Three, New North Road Baptist Church A had another convincing win, beating Kingsmith Fountain Of Youth to bring the fixtures in that division up to date.

Further rounds of the two cup competitions took place over the past two weeks.

Last year’s Royds Hall Printing Trophy winners Deighton B are through to the quarter-final stages of this year’s competition, beating a Deighton C team by a 63-point margin. Greetland and Kingsmith Engineering A also comfortably progressed to the quarter-final stages beating Kingsmith Engineering C and Deighton F by 93 and 70 points respectively.

Deighton C from Division Two were up against the Third Division’s Deighton G team and it was the lower division side that progressed by a narrow two-point margin.

Marsh Con D, Woodfield Park B, Wilshaw A and Wilshaw B occupy the remaining places in the quarter-finals beating Deighton D, Kingsmith Engineering D, Marsh Con C and Deighton A respectively.

There will be a new name on this season’s Table Tennis Direct Cup, as last year’s finalists were involved in the Trophy competition.

U3A B were in receipt of a net nine-point handicap advantage and progress to the quarter-final stage with a comfortable 81-point win over fellow Division Three side Scissett.

The remaining matches were a lot closer with Marsh Con B, New North Road Baptist Church A and Paddock booking their places with wins over Kingsmith Fountain Of Youth, Marsh Terriers and Woodfield Park A respectively.

Due to the odd number of teams involved in the cup competition, it was necessary for some teams to be allocated a bye. Kingsmith Engineering E, U3A A and New North Road Baptist Church B will therefore progress to the next round.
