Town must rally to save home of the Greatest Game...

- By DAVE CALVERLEY

WHAT a roaring success our social at the Shoulder Of Mutton was to watch the Catalans game.

The place was packed – there must have been well over 120 people present.

The atmosphere was great, with plenty ‘Ger ‘em onside ref’, ‘lyin’ on’, and the perennial ‘offside’.

While we must be encouraging people to go to matches, it has been mooted that this type of event be repeated for our away matches when shown on Sky.

We shall be discussing this at our next committee meeting.

Thanks to Eleanor and Ash for the outstanding food and making us feel welcome.

From one homely hostelry to one which is in need of some TLC – the George Hotel in town.

Not only is Huddersfield known throughout the world because of the town being the founding venue of Rugby League, but we are extremely privileged that the building where it was decided upon is still standing.

The next World Cup will be in 2021. The John Smith’s Stadium will be hosting a match.

Every visitor to these shores ought to want to visit the birthplace of TGG [The Greatest Game], but will they once they know that The George is close to falling down because of lack of attention?

The town ought to be able to attract thousands of visitors in 2021 because of the fact that WE are the birthplace of our sport.

Yes, there are other buildings in need of attention.

But none is as iconic as The George. What can we, the fans of the game, do about it?

Initially read the petition at change.org/p/save-thegeorge-hotel-in-huddersfield, see if you agree with its sentiments, then sign it.

Our home page contains a Google calendar, which lists all things Giants.

It now includes the Fartown Masters team’s fixtures.

Chris Rostron, the head of Rugby League Cares, was our guest for February and despite lots of us having heard of his organisation, not a lot of us knew the inner workings of it. Chris explained everything, how they help players and former players and how they rely on donations from various organisations and also from the fans.

Next month’s meeting will feature Huddersfield’s two top referees, Chris Kendall and Michael Mannifield, at Turnbridge on Tuesday,

March 5.

And finally a word about Bruno. Michael Lawrence is one of our most respected players.

As you will be aware, he is having his testimonial this year. On Saturday, February 28, he is having his Testimonial Dinner, to which everyone is invited.

The compere is Robbie Hunter-Paul with a question and answer session involving Bruno together with Darren Fleary and Luke Robinson.

£40, or if you book a table for 10 the price is £35 each.
