Town could appeal OG as Karlan claims touch

KARL AN Grant insists he is going to enjoy being a Premier League player for as long as it lasts.

The 21-year-old striker, signed from Charlton in the January transfer window, has made two appearances from the bench so far in a baptism of fire against Chelsea and Arsenal.

Town head coach Jan Siewert isn’t going to rush Grant into a Premier League start after his step up from League One.

But Grant, who came on against boyhood heroes Arsenal on Saturday and tried to claim Town’s late TOWN’S first goal in six matches will go down as an own goal – unless the club appeals.

As it stands the 93rd-minute consolation in the 2-1 loss against Arsenal has been recorded as a Sead Kolasinac own goal by the Premier League. Initially, the stadium announcer gave the goal to Adama Diakhaby before the Arsenal defender’s name, with ‘OG’ next to it, flashed up on the scoreboard.

But after the match Town striker Karlan Grant, who was making just his second appearance for the club since signing from Charlton in January, claimed the ball touched his knee on the way into the net.

“Definitely mine, 100 per cent, yes,” said the 21-year-old.

“It hit my knee. It definitely touched me.” Town can now appeal the Premier League’s decision on behalf of Grant if they wish.

A spokesperson for the Premier League explained: “The onus is on the club to appeal the decision and as far as I am aware there has been no contact.

“If they do appeal it will go to a goal accreditation panel who will watch it back and review. This is usually made up of a referee and two former players but it can vary.” There is precedent for a goal decision being changed following an appeal by a club.

Last season Tottenham Hotspur contacted the Premier League to argue a goal that had been given to Christian Eriksen against Stoke should actually have been awarded to Harry Kane. The decision was reversed as the goal accreditation panel agreed that Kane, who was chasing the Golden Boot, had touched the ball.
