Eight sides caught up in the battle for survival

- By MEL BOOTH @examinerHTAFC

PREMIER League fans can look ahead to what could be one of the tightest relegation battles in recent memory, with as many as eight sides looking over their shoulder at the drop zone.

Town, 14 points adrift, and Fulham, seven points from safety, look likely to spend next season playing in the Championship, but the final spot is difficult to predict.

Just three points separate Southampton in 18th and Crystal Palace in 13th in the league table.

The Saints’ 2-1 defeat to relegation rivals Cardiff City at the weekend put Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side inside the bottom three and Oddschecker ranks the Saints at 9/2, with Cardiff still priced ahead at 4/5.

Burnley may be undefeated in their last seven Premier League matches but their situation still looks bleak at 7/2, while Newcastle United also have work to do as they stand at 6/1 to suffer a drop to the Championship ahead of their next match, which is at home to Town.

Rafa Benitez’s squad are warmweather training in Spain this week, after their controversial 1-1 draw with Wolves, in readiness to take on Jan Siewert’s Terriers.

Elsewhere, arch-rivals Crystal Palace and Brighton are also in the running but a price of 20/1 is being offered for Roy Hodgson’s side to be relegated, which shows the bookies are confident the Eagles will avoid the drop.

Huddersfield Town - 1/500; Fulham - 1/9; Cardiff City - 4/5; Burnley - 7/2; Southampton - 9/2; Newcastle United - 6/1; Brighton & Hove Albion - 8/1; Crystal Palace - 20/1
