Woman dies after blaze
INQUIRY IS LAUNCHED INTO FIRE THAT GUTTED HOUSE
A WOMAN caught in a fire that gutted a house in Mirfield has died.
Firefighters, police and ambulance were called to the Huddersfield Road property at around 8.30am on Monday.
The woman, in her 70s, was taken to hospital at around 9.30am but it was yesterday confirmed that she had died.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police can confirm a woman has died following a fire at a property in Mirfield.
“The incident happened on Monday, February 11. Officers were called to reports of a fire at an address on Huddersfield Road.
“A woman, in her 70s, was taken to hospital, but has since died as a result of the incident.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the fire.”
The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Around 50pc of the property was gutted by the blaze. Five fire appliances were called out.
An aerial platform was used in the operation as the property is set back from Huddersfield Road on a raised bank opposite Battyeford Sporting Club.
Traffic was stopped on Huddersfield Road, from Cooper Bridge heading towards Mirfield, for most of Monday morning.
Following the tragedy, firefighters from Mirfield Fire Station have been carrying out fire prevention work in the area.
