How Town can shackle Toon’s dangerous duo

-

By DAVID ALEXANDER HUGHES

Almiron arrived from Atlanta having scored or assisted in 25 goals in his last term in the MLS, and made his Premier League debut for Newcastle in their 1-1 draw with Wolves on Monday.

Despite playing only 24 minutes from the bench, he made an notable impact. Having originally lined up in a 3-5-1-1 formation at kick off, following his substitution onto the pitch, they reverted to a 5-4-1 with Almiron deployed out on the wide left

Newcastle were under pressure for the bulk of his time on the pitch as they looked to protect a one-goal lead, however he still managed to successfully complete 100 per cent of his attempted dribbles and crosses - two from two - and he also completed 10/11 passes in the game.

While the full potential of Almiron wasn’t unleashed on his debut, it’s clear Almiron can be used as a breakout counter-attacking option.

One of his primary strengths is his dribbling, and Newcastle will be able to rely on him to pick the ball up in his own half before driving towards the opposition. .

It is something Town should be aware of, for sure.

Sean Longstaff, meanwhile, made his first start for Newcastle in a tight 2-1 away defeat at Chelsea.

That night he produced an assured midfield performance with a pass completion rate of 88 per cent.

Since then he has started each Premier League game for the Magpies - and coincidently their only defeats in that time have been to sides inside the top six.

When confronted, he never pan- ics and provides that tranquil presence in the heart of their midfield.

His dribbling success average is 87.4 per cent, demonstrating his ability to use his skill to wriggle out of tight situations when required.

He is another that could prove instrumental in their meeting if Town are unable to shackle the young midfielder.

ALMIRON is an all-action player who is quick and very nimble with the ball at his feet.

As a result, teams have enjoyed most success stopping the Paraguayan by ‘doublingup’ in defensive situations.

In a study of his performance for New York Red Bulls v Atlanta last season, the Red Bulls defence are quick to close down Almiron in an advantageous position deep inside their half.

Due to the sheer number of bodies around Almiron, the attacker is crowded out quickly and New York can reclaim possession of the ball, halting a dangerous attack.

If Town can restrict the threat of Newcastle’s key two they might

have a chance
