A MAN caught drink-driving said he was going through a rough patch following the failure of his marriage and a struggling business.

Matthew Ashness was stopped as he drove along Huddersfield Road in Mirfield shortly after midnight on January 26.

He caught the attention of police as he turned onto Church Lane at a fast speed and they were also concerned about the state of the white van, prosecutor Alex Bozman said. Mr Bozman said: “They made various inquiries because they were concerned about the ownership of the vehicle and it became apparent during the course of their conversation with Ashness that he was under the influence.

“He was asked if he’d been drinking and said that he’d had a couple of pints.”

The 35-year-old was arrested after failing a roadside breath test. Further tests at Dewsbury Police Station showed that he had 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Ashness, of Robin Hood Court in Liversedge, pleaded guilty to driving while over the prescribed limit.

He explained to magistrates that when the incident happened he had split up with his wife of 14 years and his business was struggling.

Ashness said: “My job got cancelled that evening and I got a phone call from my auntie inviting me to go round and I was on my way past so I called in.

“Stupidly I had three to four pints and got in the vehicle and drove.

“It’s not something I do regularly. I was just trying to get by at a rough time in my life.”

Magistrates banned him from driving for 12 months. He was fined £400 and ordered to pay £85 costs plus £40 victim surcharge.
