What the EU has done for us: revealed

THE millions of EU cash spent in Kirklees have been revealed by new research.

Figures show the borough has secured at least £19m in European Union grants in recent years, most of which has gone to Huddersfie­ld.

But the real figure could be much higher amid struggles identifyin­g just how much cash has been dished out.

Research by proRemain groups MyEU and Best For Britain shows we have benefited from significan­t investment thanks to the bureaucrat­s in Brussels, including £2.64m to Kirklees Council to try to get more people into work.

The University of Huddersfie­ld has also received at least £12.9m for a range of projects.

But the research found the university was also involved in a further £5.5m worth of EU-funded projects where the amount dedicated to Huddersfie­ld could not be determined.

The team behind MyEU said: “The UK Government will spend about £809bn this year, and less than 2% of this goes to the EU.

“We wondered what impact that spending was having in the UK, and made this site to find out. “We know there are data sources and projects we haven’t captured yet.”

Best For Britain says the country no longer backs Brexit. It claims 193 ‘leave’ constituen­cies have changed their minds and 422 of 632 constituen­cies no longer support leaving the EU.
