Daring dance will shed light on toxic masculinity
THE theme of toxic masculinity will be explored through dance in the opening show at the Lawrence Batley Theatre’s 2019 fringe festival.
Shut Down is billed as a dance exploration of ‘toxic masculinity’ asking audiences what we mean when we say ‘be a man.’
It is the opening show of A Festival, the Huddersfield theatre’s fringe festival.
The show is the first all-male dance piece by Vincent Dance sider how ideas of masculinity restrict and endanger young men and the people in their lives.
“Shut Down is directed by Charlotte Vincent, artistic director of Vincent Dance Theatre and creator of feminist choreography for 25 years,” the LBT said.
“Shut Down is a relevant and daring show for the MeToo era. The performance asks difficult questions.
“How do men learn to feel entitled? Does the urge to ‘be a man’ teach boys to suppress emotion and embrace aggression? What ideas about power and responsibility do men inherit from their fathers?”
The 2019 festival, which runs from Tuesday, March 5 to Sunday, March 10, features a programme of shows inspired by gender and identity.
Baby Face confronts the infantilisation of women, while Unsung tells the stories of women who redefined history but are absent from history books.
Jennifer Lack asks how influence and inheritance shape identity in Narratively Satisfying.
And Ad Libido is a comic show about one woman’s quest to have a satisfying sex life.
