It was a Nobel effort but Donald can’t nobble peace prize
DONALD Trump begged Japan to nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize.
After announcing his emergency order for a southern border wall, the President bragged for several minutes about being put forward for the prestigious award.
Trump boasted in response to a question about his expectations of the second summit with Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, in Vietnam.
He said Shinzo Abe, the Japanese Prime Minister, had sent him “the most beautiful copy of a letter that he sent to the people who give out a thing called the Nobel Prize”.
“He said, ‘I have nominated you, respectfully, on behalf of Japan. I am asking them to give you the Nobel Peace Prize’”, Trump boasted.
He then went on to attack his predecessor, Barack Obama, who received the award 10 years ago.
Trump complained Mr Obama was there “for about 15 seconds” before he was awarded the prize.
“I’ll probably never get it, but that’s OK,” Trump said. “They gave it to Obama. He didn’t even know what he got it for.”
Trump asserted Mr Obama was on the brink of starting “a big war” with North Korea, a claim disputed by the former President’s aides.
Now it has emerged Mr Abe only made the Peace Prize nomination after receiving a request from the US government to do so.
According to Japan’s Asahi newspaper, Trump’s team asked for him to be put forward after the US leader’s first summit with Kim in June last year.
A spokesman for Japan’s Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said they “would refrain from commenting on the interaction between the two leaders” while the White House stayed schtum.
If there was a Nobel Prize for narcissism, Trump would be an absolute shoo-in.
