Man relives attack drama
GOOD SAMARITAN CAME TO RESCUE OF ASSAULT VICTIM BEGGING FOR HELP
A GOOD Samaritan has given a dramatic account of how he gave first aid to a man who had been assaulted outside his Dalton home.
Peter Cartwright, 72, said he was watching T V at his bungalow on Ridgeway on Wednesday morning when he heard a ‘slight scratching’ sound.
He said he went to investigate and found a 37-year-old man begging for help. A man has now been charged in connection with the attack.
Peter said: “Fortunately I am St John Ambulance trained so I was able to help him.
“He told me he had been run over at the ‘little wall’ area by the bus shelter but it turned out later that he had, in fact, been assaulted.
“I helped him as best I could and phoned for the police and an ambulance. He looked in a bad way and was as white as a ghost and holding his chest really hard.
“He was deteriorating fast and was losing the power of speech. He was complaining about pains in his stomach. I didn’t see any blood but later I found that my mobility scooter which I had placed him on was covered in it.
“He said he didn’t know what had happened to him. The left hand side of his lung had dropped and he had a bad bruise on his left hand side. He was complaining about the pain in his chest and his neck.
“The police and ambulance services arrived and he was taken to hospital and I gave a statement to the police.” The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was seen landing at the DRAM Centre playing fields just off the road, and officers cordoned off the street for most of the day.
Police at first thought the man had been hit by a van but are now treating the incident as assault.
Andrew Scaife, 45, of Almondbury, was yesterday charged with section 18 assault. He is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court today.
