Colder weather such a contrast

- By MARTIN SHAW

AFTER record-breaking February temperatures and early Spring-like weather, Huddersfield is facing a cold, wet March – with snow showers to come.

Temperatures last month reached an all-time high of 16.7C, making it the warmest ever recorded in February.

But the early taste of Spring has disappeared and March has been cold and wet, and there’s snow showers forecast for Sunday night.

Examiner weather expert Paul Stevens said: “March will turn out to be very wet for the North West of the UK, including Huddersfield. So far we’ve had 38mm with a further 50-60mm on the cards before the middle of the month. That would be 170% of normal and the first wetter than normal month since autumn.”

However, that’s not a bad thing, he said. “We need it to top up for summer after a dry winter.”

Paul said today will be windy with a few showers and around 8C. A band of rain will move south tonight, turning windy with gusts up to 50mph.

It will turn colder with sleet or snow showers following. The temperature will fall to around 2C and there will be icy patches.

The snow might stick above 350m, with slight accumulations, and there will be more snow showers on Sunday night with “slight accumulations in places.”

A Weather Channel spokesman said: “Blustery showers and strong winds could batter the country for several days with a succession of weather fronts piling into the UK.

“An energised Atlantic jet stream will push low pressure systems towards Britain with frequent outbreaks of rain and high winds.

“It is likely to be breezy at times with the risk of occasional gale force gusts, particularly in the north and northwest. It will feel quite raw in the winds, but there is no imminent sign of any prolonged spells of cold weather.”
