It’s a bit of a fallacy when people say, ‘Oh is anyone left in that village?’ It’s not a village. It’s a huge county!
Neil Dudgeon, 58, returns to the role of DCI John Barnaby as detective drama Midsomer Murders turns 20 this month. But what can fans expect from the landmark series? finds out more introduce a character who would test different styles of theatre
Barnaby, somebody with whom he and thus of acting, so when would have a more provocative they come in to Midsomer relationship, and Fleur does just that. they can do all of that within
She is not what we are expecting to scenes. begin with and she very much challenges Barnaby and Winter in a number of ways – she is obviously very good at her job and she can be quite direct, which is brilliant. YES the Easter eggs are little references throughout the episode that refer to things from previous series – and there are 20 Easter eggs [to mark 20 years].
Fans who know the show better than I do, I think, will enjoy it ver y much. It’s a nice little fun way for fans of the show to go, ‘Oh yes, that’s like that’ – although I don’t know whether they’re going to be picked out in any particular way, because otherwise there’s so much in an episode of Midsomer Murders that’s odd anyway!
You’ve played Barnaby since 2011. Can you ever see yourself hanging up your warrant card? Your predecessor, John Nettles, managed over 80 episodes. BLIMEY. I’ve only done about 45. I don’t know whether I could last that long. I think there’s endless room for the show to carry on [but] whether I would carry on? I can’t imagine not carrying on. But there may come a point when I’m too old and physically and mentally decrepit to be able to do it.
