Brexit has been a success without all the politicians

-

WHILE Europe stumbles, Britain is booming, let’s go with the news instead of unqualified analysis.

The chancellor’s budget is blowing out in the opposite direction to southern Europe’s. “UK public finances set for windfall in spring statement” reports the FT. The Telegraph reports European investment in the UK has doubled since the Brexit referendum. A lot of Europe has been at or near recession. “There haven’t been as good opportunities to invest in Europe as there have been in the UK, which has been performing well,” Nick George at PricewaterhouseCoopers told the Telegraph.

The Wall Street Journal reports the Brexit banker exodus simply hasn’t happened. And migration rates are stable.

Add to all this the usual stats. Unemployment at lowest since the 1970s. Wage growth at a 10-year high, despite inflation at low levels. Productivity growth is trending up according to the Bank of England.

Adding insult to prosperity for project fear, even UK house prices are up – almost 6% in a month – an “unprecedented jump” according to Bloomberg.

Gray and his erroneous ferry debacle to one side, so far, the only Brexit disaster is the £33m which the Government must pay Eurotunnel to avoid legal action. In fact, if you take out political news, Brexit has been an unmitigated success. Better than anything a Brexiteer dreamed of.

It’s a shame we can’t have another two years of uncertainty where the politicians are so busy squabbling with Brexit, they don’t manage to interfere in our lives in all the usual ways.

And that’s the real reason we’re doing well according to qualified investment house analysts. The world trade organisation states the UK has nothing to fear leaving the EU.

The place is shutting due to a large minority of children and young adults running wild. It’s the parents of these unruly kids that are the reason for the closure in the first place.

If you want an apology, then give it to the kids and their parents who have been failed by the system, and to the many struggling teachers who have attempted for many years to teach the good kids.

Typical for a Tory councillor to come out with these statements purely for political reasons rather than facing up to the real problems in our many schools in recent years.

That runway will do nothing for the people of Kirklees, two thirds of flights are taken by just 15% of the population – a privileged group of frequent leisure flyers, predominantly living in the South East.

More flights means more pollution. This should concern us all, given the reports of devastating climate change around the world and here in the UK, such as the recent wildfires on Saddleworth Moor. With a greater risk of heatwaves due to climate change, we may well see wildfires become a regular threat

It’s no surprise that this week the Government is in court defending its decision to expand Heathrow despite its legal obligation to cut carbon pollution year-on-year.

Since that decision, Ministers have asked expert advisors to review the UK’s long-term climate policies. Whatever the outcome in the courts, surely parliament should wait for that review to conclude and then look again at Heathrow?
