Home favourite Stewart to star for county

- By RICHARD SYKES

LOCKWOOD Park, home of Huddersfield RUFC, is staging the second of the county Under 20s series of games against Cheshire on Sunday (2.15pm).

Huddersfield winger Kian Stewart is in Yorkshire’s starting line-up.

Stewart featured in the warm-up game against Leeds Beckett University, but missed out on the county’s series opener over Lancashire having picked up an injury the previous week playing for Huddersfield.

The Tykes won that game played at Preston Grasshoppers’ Lightfoot Green ground 35 -25.

Meanwhile, the finale of the Yorkshire Colts county cup matches are also being staged at Lockwood Park ground.

The finals of the Yorkshire Cup and Yorkshire Plate are being held on March 24, with the final of the Yorkshire Bowl taking place a week later on March 31.

Huddersfield RUFC Senior Academy feature in the final of the Yorkshire Cup against Wharfedale (2.15pm).

That match will be preceded by the Plate final between Selby and Scunthorpe (1pm). Doncaster and Pocklington will contest the Bowl final which starts at noon. Huddersfield Academy won the county Bowl in 2018 and are hoping to get their hands on the top ranked trophy this year.

The team, coached by Mike Baggs and Geoff Burrell, have only lost once this season and are top of their league.

They progressed to the final by beating the current Cup holders Sheffield in the semi-final.
