Irish Centre celebrate cup win while rain causes chaos

- HUDDERSFIELD & DISTRICT AFL By AIDAN HOPSON

I THINK, looking at the position Huddersfield find themselves in, they will expect not only a win, but a stylish victory.

They have been playing well at the London Stadium and will be looking to make up for their defeat at Cardiff last weekend. ALEX Pritchard impressed in the drawn game at Huddersfield, scoring early on and was always looking to push the Terriers forward. Christopher Schindler looks a useful player, but I don’t think West Ham will look to recruit any of them for next season. I THINK they will be remembered fondly for all their efforts in their first Premier League season. They played well under David Wagner, with an excellent spirit.

The second season is always more difficult and so it has proved, but the team have never given up trying, even when all seemed lost. a few, based on their form at Cardiff last week, not so many.

Brazilian Felipe Anderson has been a star this season, while Marko Arnautovic should return up front for this one and will be a real danger.

Other than that, skipper Mark Noble is always an inspiration, the goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has been excellent, while central midfielder Declan Rice has been superb all season and was called up for England for the first time this week. THE wet weather decimated last weekend’s fixtures.

In the Barlow Cup, Heywoods Irish Centre beat Honley away 4-1 with goals from Nathan Eastwood (2), Thomas Maher and John Tarazi. Honley’s consolation was scored by Phil Rigby.

Slaithwaite United travelled to Britannia Sports and despite leading 2-0 at half-time with goals from Ashley Beaumont and Michael Brook, they were pegged back to 3-3 at full time. Further goals from Chris Wilkins in the second half and in extra time made the final score 4-4. Britannia won 4-3 on penalties.

In Division 1, Diggle, with goals from Hudson and Mayall, fought out a 2-2 draw with visitors Newsome, who had Tariq and McMahon on the scoresheet.

Division 2 strugglers Holme Valley Academicals played out a 0-0 draw with Netherton, while Kirkheaton Rovers were well beaten 4-1 at Almondbury Woolpack, whose goals were scored by David Ginty, Tony Wales, Daniel Bradley and Barnaby Wood.

Division 3 basement club Golcar United were well beaten by Brook

Motors 6-2 with goals from Eales, Lodge, an own goal, Turner and Martin (2). Brooks are now out of the relegation zone.

Deighton stay top of Division 4 with a 4-3 home win over Kirkburton.

The goals for Deighton came from Ashfield, Hussain, Price and Webster. In reply Kirkburton’s goals came from Marples (2) and Matt Willans.

In the reserve divisions Newsome were crowned Division 1 champions following a 3-1 home win over Netherton. Newsome’s goals came from Moses, Myers and Hill with Woodhall for Netherton.

In the same division Heywoods Irish Centre beat Diggle 7-1 with goals from Collins (2), Mellor (2), Raynor and a double from substitute Diaw. Joe Hirst scored Diggle’s consolation.

Shepley beat Honley 3-1 with goals from Walters and Goring (2) and Honley’s goal came from Matthews.

AFC Daltwon lost the chance to go top of Division 2 losing 1-0 at home to Junction. Substitute Callum Bates netted the match-winning goal.

A hat-trick from Chris Sansom was in vain for Skelmanthorpe against Scholes in their Gee Cup tie as, after an extratime 3-3 draw, they lost out on penalties 3-2. In Division 4 Cumberworth B and Grange Moor Saints completed their fixtures with a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Cumberworth’s goals came from Phelan, Simpson and Gower while goals for the Saints came from Knott, Mays and Perkis.
