Anti-racism banner in support of Billing

- By BEN ABBISS

TOWN fans showed their support for Philip Billing with an anti-racism banner during Saturday’s Premier League match against West Ham.

Members of the Southern Terriers Huddersfield Town supporters group held up a banner that read ‘Philip Billing – One Of Our Own’ alongside the logos for the club and the Kick It Out campaign.

Billing, 22, was subjected to racist online abuse last week when he was sent a message by a member of the public on Twitter.

West Yorkshire Police arrested a 16-year-old boy in relation to the racially aggravated message but he was later released pending further inquiries.

The midfielder, who is Danish of Nigerian descent, received support from Huddersfield Town fans and the club itself, who condemned the abuse.

Bob Farrell, from the Southern Terriers, explained why his group wanted to show their support for the Town midfielder.

He said: “We wanted to support Phil at this time. He is a young player who as come through our academy and we wanted to make a stand against racism in football and the wider community.

“No-one should have endure this behaviour in today’s society.”

The Southern Terriers are also planning to bring the banner to Town’s next home game at the John Smith’s Stadium, which will be on Saturday, April 6, against

Leicester.
