Your life won’t come to an end if you ditch the car

AFTER 62 years as a driver, can I adapt to life without a car? Yes, I am coping and it’s not the end of the world.

There are many benefits to my altered life-style. No longer do I have to worry if we are assailed with snow and ice; no need to waste time shopping around for a reasonable car insurance quote.

The price of petrol? It doesn’t concern me.

And I never enjoyed washing the car and avoided it whenever possible.

We now have an excellent bus service on weekdays, to and from Houses Hill. There’s lots of choice – eight buses a day.

Also, I now avail myself of the Access Bus to get to Morrison’s. All the drivers are helpful and friendly – service with a smile.

I have to use a taxi if I need to go to town at the weekend. Last Saturday I was very fortunate to have a most helpful taxi driver who took my arm to help me as we crossed the road in the very strong wind and heavy rain and also as we walked up my drive.

All in addition to this, I have a most considerate son who helps me whenever I need it.

Good neighbours, too. Life is good. IN the Brexit madness why does the border between Ireland (population barely five million – less than Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire, according to Wikipedia) and Northern Ireland (population 1.5 million) take centre stage – when in fact it’s a back water ?

Do you ever hear any mention or fuss over of the border between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire – crossed by the M62?

In the UK as a whole only 17 million people voted to Leave out of an electorate of 46 million (according to the Electoral Commission ) – one third.

London’s population (nine million) voted overwhelmingly to Remain in the EU in the Referendum three years ago – the capital’s population is as big as the combined populations of Berlin (four million), Rome (three million ) and Paris.

Yet aganst its expressed wishes London is being politically ignored in the UK Prime Minister’s perverse actions paying out billions in sweetners to the DUP for Ulster – while northern England does not have a decent rail service between Manchester and Leeds across the Pennine border. A GOVERNMENT Minister states that we are all suffering from Brexit fatigue.

I would say we are all fatigued by the venality of government Ministers and the political class in general.

The 2016 Referendum was clear, the majority voted for Leave, not the half-in half-out of May’s Withdrawal Agreement.

If only we had a press that was willing to interrogate the detail of the agreement instead of spouting the soundbites offered by the venal establishment.

The win was 52% – 48%. Nobody questions the validity of those MPs who sit comfortably in the House of Commons on less than 50% of the vote share, or governments formed by parties winning barely 40% of the popular vote.

No-Deal and thus no need to squander the £39bn our elected ones are keen to drag by the sack load across the channel to their EU gang-masters.

That’s patriotism, not May’s Withdrawl Agreement written for her by Merkel and Co. Anyone got a day free?

I have 600+ backbones to deliver to the House of Commons
